Members of Tangipahoa Parish Fire District #1 and 2 are accepting donations of supplies for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana.
Rural Fire District 2 Administrator Dennis Crocker and TPFD #1 Chief Bruce Cutrer commented on the drive for donations, which has many of the fire stations across the parish participating.
“It’s a very noble idea and we are glad to work as a team and do whatever we can to help the people who are devastated in Texas,” Cutrer said. “Our station, station one, is a drop off point for non-perishable products in the food line and there will be arrangements made to deliver it to Texas.”
Crocker stated that Rural Fire District 2 came up with the idea. Every fire department agreed and are now accepting goods to deliver to Texas. He said he thought it was a great opportunity for Tangipahoa Parish to come together for a good cause.
Some items that are being accepted for donation include: Baby foods, baby supplies, small toys, hygiene products, toiletries, cleaning supplies, clothing, pet food, drinking water, manual can openers, electric fans, large trash bags, extra batteries (all sizes), first aid kits or items, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, unscented bleach, and shovels/rakes. No cash donations are being accepted, only tangible goods.
According to Cutrer, a cut off time for donations has not been set, as of yet. Crocker mentioned that the goal is to keep the donations coming in as long as possible, as there has been a strong response in the two days since announcing that the fire districts were gathering items for hurricane victims in Texas. Donations will also be accepted at Ponchatoula Fire Station at 205 Northwest Railroad Avenue, Independence Fire Station at 153 West 7th Street, Hammond Rural Fire Station at 44532 South Baptist Road, Loranger Fire Station at 53096 Highway 40, Natalbany Fire Station at 48026 Galafora Road, Wilmer Fire Station at 22115 Highway 10, Kentwood Fire Station 42382 Highway 445, City of Hammond Fire Department at any of the five fire stations in the city.

Dr. Nick Cefalu shows off impressive LSU collection

Most LSU fans are devoted, having purple and gold colors spread across their homes, wearing LSU attire or displaying Mike the Tiger motifs on their walls. However, Dr. Nicholas Cefalu is not like most LSU fans, as he has a museum of LSU Athletics history in his backyard.

With football season officially starting this week, fans are excited to once again cheer on their local schools and favorite teams, as the players take to the gridiron. For LSU fans, that means breaking out the purple and gold, flying the LSU banners and singing along to “Calling Baton Rouge.” Cefalu will also join in the festivities, but his passion goes beyond football season.

Cefalu is a local physician based in Amite who studied at Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans. His love for the Tigers is well-known throughout the community, as he promotes the annual "Meet the Tigers" fundraiser at St. Helena Catholic Church each year. He has hosted legendary baseball coach and athletic director Skip Bertman, Smoke Laval and Paul Mainieri, as well as many great LSU players through the years.

HAMMOND- Conditions at the Kentwood and Independence school systems may prove to be a fatal weight on the Tangipahoa Parish School Board’s proposed 20-mills, three tier tax.

The tax is scheduled for the Nov. 18 ballot, but those attending a meeting in Hammond Aug. 18 to discuss the board’s student assignment plan strongly indicated they cannot support the taxes under current conditions, and also criticized the board’s magnet program.

The meeting was called by the Tangipahoa Parish Chapter of the NAACP.

If the taxes are approved, the revenue would go for teacher salary increases and benefits, to catch up on delayed maintenance and remove portable classrooms from school campuses.

They say the best things in life are worth waiting for, so therefore imagine walking out your back door and suddenly noticing a large tree-type stalk growing out of the center of your cactus plant. You then proceed to watch it grow over a length of time to a height of approximately 35 feet. This phenomenon is what happened to Kentwood resident Ann Hurst.

“It started growing, and the next time I looked it seemed like it had grown overnight,” exclaimed Hurst, who lives near the peaceful gardens of Inspiration Park.

Hursts’ “Century Plant” has finally begun to bloom and the tree-type stalk coming up from the center of the cactus plant is called the flowering pole. The base of the flowering pole is approximately 8 inches in diameter.

RUNNING TO MEMPHIS - St. Helena senior ATH Troy Hurst has committed to the University of Memphis after an active recruitment period Hurst was an All-District selection last year. Tangilena Media/ Jesse Brooks

Troy Hurst, a senior athlete for the St. Helena Hawks football team, has verbally committed to play for the University of Memphis following his high school career.
Hurst, rated a 3-star athlete by 247 Sports, has multiple offers including one from the University of Missouri as early as last Spring. Recent visits to the Tigers’ campus helped seal the deal for the sought after Hawk.
“The environment and movement is lovely there,” Hurst said of his future campus. “I feel I would fit into their system. I also plan on getting a degree in business management, and I’m continually working on my craft and staying on top of my grades.”
Hurst was recruited by Memphis as a versatile athlete that can play both sides of the ball. According to Hurst, Memphis could give him the opportunity to play on both sides of the ball in the positions of safety, wide receiver and running back.
Playing multiple positions is commonplace for Hurst. As a Hawk, he has checked in at linebacker and with the secondary. Last season, he began on offense as a starting wide receiver but eventually started at running back after Jeremy Griffin went down with a leg injury in week seven. He ended last season as the Hawks’ leading rusher with 915 rushing yards and 333 receiving.
Hurst is the fourth player from Louisiana this year to commit to Memphis and is expected to join former Amite defensive back Josh Perry on the active roster next season.

Tangipahoa fire stations collect donations for Hurricane Harvey victims

During the floods that inundated Southern Louisiana in March and August of 2016, the charity of others was put on full display as first responders and volunteers from all over donated their time to provide aid in a time of despair and need. Some came and helped with demolition and rebuilding; others organized donation drives to help those affected by the flood waters. Now, just over a year later, first responders from Tangipahoa Parish Rural Fire District 2 and Tangipahoa Parish Fire District #1 have organized donations of non-perishable items for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas.

Organized by TPRFD2 Administrator Dennis Crocker, the donations are being taken in at many of the fire stations across Tangipahoa Parish. From as far north as Kentwood to Ponchatoula in the south, the fire stations began receiving donations from Tangipahoa Parish residents on Monday, August 28 and aim to keep the drive going as long as long as possible.

Associate Extension Agent and Youth Development Director Angela Myles announced that 4-H has recently created several specialty clubs.

Last year, 4-H established a Shooting Sports Club at St. Helena College and Career Academy and St. Helena Arts and Technology Academy that sends students to competitions after being trained in rifle shooting and archery. Richard Womack serves as the club’s coach and the club sent two students to Regionals that performed well enough to qualify for state.

There were six youth that participated in the sewing club, and three youth that showed goats in a tri-state competition last school year.

4-H has also established a Junior Leaders Club, an organization that trains students and gets them involved in civic minded activities. Currently, there are 40 members of the Junior Leaders Club. Last year’s projects revolved around foster care, and the club is gearing up for cancer awareness this year. Grades 4-12 will also focus on projects that deal with arts and technologies as part of a curriculum that was developed by California 4-H.

At the August 22 regular session of the St. Helena Parish Police Jury, State Senator Rick Ward addressed parish residents by giving them a report on the state budget.

Sen. Ward says that the state has faced a major deficit since before 2016, and it now stands at $1.6 billion.

“We’ve faced a deficit prior to 2016, but when we started a new legislative term and a new governor, some things came to the forefront that we didn’t know existed,” Sen. Ward said.

In an attempt to solve the shortfall, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards called a special session in which cuts freed up $100 million, and a one cent temporary sales tax was implemented in hopes of stabilizing the budget and moving forward from the deficit.
